Galway wealth is not old money and it is rarely flashy. It sits in medtech, which is the industry that quietly rebuilt this city: Medtronic, Boston Scientific and the cluster of engineering firms around them employ a great many senior people on serious salaries, most of whom drive an ordinary car and live in an ordinary estate.

The other concentrations are the hospital and the hospitality trade. University Hospital Galway carries a large body of consultants and senior clinicians, and the city has an unusual number of people who own two or three businesses in the Latin Quarter rather than working for anyone. Those three groups behave very differently, and it is worth knowing which one you are talking to.

What is worth knowing is the hours rather than the personalities. Medtech runs standard office weeks, so weekday evenings are genuinely free. Hospital consultants work rosters and on-call, so their free evenings move around and are often confirmed late. Hospitality owners work when everyone else is off, which usually means a Sunday or Monday rather than a Friday.

A small city changes what a first message should say

Galway city is around 85,000 people, which is small enough that anonymity is not really available to either of you. That sounds like a problem and it is actually the reason directness works better here than it does in Dublin. The single best discretion tool in Galway is a short drive. Ennis is under an hour, and Limerick city is around an hour and a half on the M18. Neither is far enough to be an expedition, and both are far enough that nobody either of you knows is going to walk past the table.

That matters more here than in a bigger city because Galway has very few places where you can sit for an hour without being seen by somebody. Salthill and the Latin Quarter are the two obvious options and they are the two most watched. If the arrangement has moved past a first coffee, an evening in Ennis solves a problem that no amount of care in Galway will solve.

Say early whether you drive or whether you are relying on the bus, because it changes what is realistic. Somebody offering to meet in Ennis when you have no car and the last bus is at nine is not being thoughtful, they are being impractical.
