Where the sugar babies in Kerry actually are

It works far better in reverse. Off-season Kerry is quiet, the hotels are cheap, and everyone has time. An arrangement that starts in October and runs to spring fits the county's actual rhythm.

Say which side of that you are on when you start talking. Somebody who assumes you are free on a July Saturday has not thought about it.

Killarney, and why Kerry is easier than it looks

Killarney is the answer to the discretion problem here. It is a town of about 14,000 permanent residents that handles a very large volume of visitors, so two people having dinner are entirely unremarkable in a way they would not be in Tralee or Dingle.

It is 30 minutes from Tralee, which puts it within reach of most of the county's population, and it has the largest concentration of good hotels anywhere in the southwest.

Know the real distances before agreeing to anything further afield though. Cork city is 99 minutes from Tralee and Limerick is 89. Those are not weekday evening journeys, and an arrangement that depends on one will quietly stop.

North Kerry and south Kerry are two different problems

Searching for Kerry as a whole makes sense, because the county has no single centre. But it is worth knowing that the two halves barely connect and which one you are in decides what is realistic.

North Kerry, Listowel and Ballybunion and the estuary side, looks toward Listowel and Tralee: Ballybunion to Listowel is 17 minutes, Ballybunion to Tralee is 35. Tralee is the county town and where the ordinary jobs are. South Kerry is Killarney, Kenmare and the Ring, and it runs on tourism.

If you are in the north of the county, Tralee is your realistic centre and Killarney is a further 30 minutes beyond it. Do not agree to meet somebody in Kenmare on a weeknight without looking at what that actually involves.

Killarney is the one town in Kerry where nobody is watching
